Challenge yourself to the Rubiks Cube!
For many children in today’s society their time is spent with some type electric gadget in hand. Do you remember when your day was spent jumping rope, working a puzzle or at least doing something that was a bit challenging to the mind? Do you remember getting your first Rubiks Cube? This 3-D educational puzzle was one of the hottest items on the market for years. Originally this challenging puzzle was created in 1974 by Erno Rubik.
Rubik wanted to help give students a new way to look at and understand 3-D geometry. He would soon learn that his idea and creation of the Rubiks Cube would be a hit all around the world. It was not only children that were interested in this new mind boggling toy. The object of the Rubiks Cube is to have all blocks be the same color on each of the 9 blocked sides. A common cube measures 5.7 cm on each of its side which is approximately 2 ½ inches. The Rubiks Cube consists of 26 unique miniature cubes which are also referred to as cubelets or cubies. Each side includes a hidden inward extension that interlocks with each of the other cubes, while allowing them to be moved in different directions.
Solving the Rubiks Cube
The center cube of the 6 faces is normally a single square, in which all 6 are connected to the core of the Rubiks Cube. This provides the structure needed in order for the additional pieces to fit and rotate properly. In all there are 21 pieces: a single area piece consisting of 3 intersecting axes that holds the 6 center squares in place but allows them to rotate, and 21 smaller pieces that will fit into these in order to form the assembled puzzle. Each of the 6 center pieces pivots on a small fastener which is held by the center piece of the 3-D cross on the Rubiks Cube. A spring that is located between the fastener and the additional piece tensions the piece inward, allowing the puzzle to be small in size for easy transport, but can still be easily rotated. Many of the original cubes were built with screws that could be adjusted while newer ones are built with rivets that cannot be adjusted.
In order to solve the Rubiks Cube you will need reason and logic. Many individuals have solved the Rubiks Cube in a timely manner but only after spending countless hours of turning the cube in every direction imaginable. It has been proven that the Rubiks Cube may be solved in as little as twenty three stages but may take more depending on how well you have mastered the puzzle.
